Partial Discharge (PD) is a dielectric breakdown of a small portion of an electrical insulation system under high voltage stress, which does not bridge the space between two conductors. This is not visible and can occur in a gaseous, liquid or solid insulating medium. Extensive partial discharge can wear down solid insulation and eventually lead to an insulation breakdown.

INTEGRATED has developed a PD Inception dialog that simulates the dielectric tests and evaluates the dielectric strength of the insulating structures – between the windings, the leads, the bushing tails and the tank turrets, etc. Given each produced device is unique, during the design phase each device is considered like a new prototype and requires the analysis of its own new challenges, every time.

There are many other applications for which the PD inception analysis is useful, such as the occurrence of water droplets due to environmental conditions on outdoor high voltage insulators that cause partial discharges and dry arcs which can ultimately result in complete flashover.

INTEGRATED’s PD inception calculation is based on measurements in oil filled transformers. However, it does not impose the base and the exponent of oil curves. Users can replace the oil curves with their own air curves, silicon curves, tangential to porcelain curves or similar.
