The Best Way to Model Magnetic Fields

May 3, 2010 - Machine Design
Most standard software for modeling magnetic fields uses the standard finite-element method. For some problems, however, an alternate boundary-element formulation can be much more efficient.

To understand the difference between the methods, it helps to recall a bit of theory. Magnetics fields are governed by Maxwell’s equations. Maxwell’s equations can be expressed in either differential or integral form. Read more

Magnetic modelling at heart of new design

September 20, 2009 - Electronic Product Design
Creating a magnetic bearing / drive system for a new centrifugal rotary blood pump was simpler when dedicated software was used as Andrew Hilton and Geoff Tansley explain.

Worldwide there are 8.75 million deaths each year due to Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). This figure is rising by 10% per annum. Currently the only long-term treatment available is a heart transplant, with 3000 people a year undergoing this procedure, but this is reliant on donor organs. One solution to this, either as a bridge to transplantation or recovery, is to use an implantable blood pump. Read more

IREQ Uses Simulation Software to Analyze Magnetic Flux Density Near Power Lines

June 1, 2009 - Transmission & Distribution World
Anywhere electric power is created, electric and magnetic fields are produced. At lower voltages and currents, the fields produced are normally of little concern. However, at high-voltage or high-current levels, the distribution of the electrical and magnetic fields must be carefully taken into account to improve equipment reliability and to protect the public and the workers.
